Plotwright is a story bible and writing app for novelists. Write your book and build the world behind it in one place, on Mac, iPad and iPhone. Every character, place, and plot thread stays close at hand while you write.
Write with your world beside you
- Type @ and a name to link it. Hover over the name, or touch and hold it, to see that character’s or place’s card.
- Plotwright notices names you’ve already made as you type, and offers to link them.
- Each chapter’s list shows the elements it mentions, and Where Used shows every place one appears.
- Show a value in the text, such as a character’s eye colour, and Plotwright flags the sentence if the value changes later.
- Nicknames and aliases, with who uses them: a nickname said by the wrong character is underlined.
- Footnotes, pictures in the text, notes to yourself that never print, and snapshots to compare a chapter with an earlier draft.
Build the story bible your way
- Characters, places, organizations, items, events and terms, each made from a template you can change, or start from one in the Template Gallery.
- Relationships and family trees, drawn around anyone you choose.
- A map of your places laid out by their distances, with land, rivers and roads you draw yourself.
- A timeline in your own calendar, with its own months, leap years and eras, that checks whether journeys are possible.
- A glossary of invented words, accepted by spell check.

- Follow plot threads chapter by chapter, and see where one goes quiet.
- One short story, a whole series, or a world: start anywhere and reshape it as it grows.
Finish and share
- Export to PDF, EPUB, Word or Markdown, including Standard Manuscript Format for agents and publishers.
- Export a Story Bible of your characters and places as a PDF or Word document.
- Style Check, worked out on your device: overused and repeated words, names spelled two ways, dialogue punctuation, tense shifts and more.
- Daily goals, word targets and deadlines, with progress you can show or hide.
Your words stay yours
- Your writing is plain Markdown in a library you keep, on your devices and in your iCloud Drive.
- No AI. If Plotwright ever adds an AI feature, it will stay off unless you turn it on.
- Automatic daily backups, and Restore to go back to any of the last seven days.
- Line width, spacing and any font on your device, such as OpenDyslexic or Atkinson Hyperlegible, for comfortable reading. VoiceOver works throughout.
