Plotwright never sends anything about how you use it unless you choose to. This page is the same as the “What Plotwright Reports” topic in How It Works inside the app (version 0.28), so you can read it before you decide.
A day after you start using Plotwright, a note at the bottom of the window asks once whether you’d like to send weekly reports: Turn On or Not Now. With Weekly Report turned on in Settings › Feedback, Plotwright offers once a week to write an email to us. A note at the bottom of the window says the report is ready: Write Report… opens it in your own email app, and Later asks again the next day. You can also write it from Write Weekly Report… at the top of the Usage Report. Nothing is sent until you send the email, and you can change or remove anything in it first.
The email starts with three questions, what’s going well, where you’re having trouble and anything else, for you to answer in a few words or leave blank. Then come the figures for each finished week you haven’t sent, Monday to Sunday, as a short summary, with the full figures attached as a file for our records. They are the Usage Report’s, and nothing else:
- Words written each day.
- Time on each screen while you were active, such as the manuscript or the outline’s Mind Map, on each kind of device.
- Actions: how many times you used each one, such as Split or Take Snapshot. Names you gave things are left out (“Add Custom Kind”).
- Done by Plotwright: changes merged from another device, and files that couldn’t be read.
- Libraries worked in that week, as a number.
- Your libraries, all together: how many books, chapters and other sections, the fewest, most and average words in them, how much is outlined, and how many elements of each kind have details filled in. Kinds you made are numbered, not named.
- Each library, by number, never by name (“Library 1”, “Library 2”): words written that week, words in all, sections and elements with details filled in.
- Settings: the daily goal and time tracking (on or off, or in how many libraries), the Style Check kinds turned off, and the manuscript view.
- When each screen and action was first used, by week.
- The app’s version, and a report ID: a random number, the same on all your devices, so your reports can be put together. Use a New Report ID in Settings gives you a new one.
Never included: your text, whether you use accessibility features such as VoiceOver or larger text, the names of libraries, characters, places or anything else, the values of fields, notes, footnotes, file names, or your email address beyond the one the email comes from. Your iPad, iPhone and Mac share these figures with each other through iCloud, so one report covers them all, and all your libraries.
Even with weekly reports, please use Send Feedback whenever something goes wrong or you have an idea, rather than saving it up: it includes a picture of the screen.
